The story of a young boy and his pioneer family trying to make ends meet in Florida. He finds a fawn and is allowed to raise it until it becomes a yearling (and more of a nuisance than a pet). Of course, by this time the boy is a "yearling" himself and has come of age with the deer. He truly grows up when he is asked by his father to kill the animal. A sweet read.
