Lone Wolf by Gregg Hurwitz
5.0
Nine books into the series and this may be the best yet. Evan Smoak, AKA the Nowhere Man and also AKA Orphan X. His journey traveled from a child raised to be a super assassin for black ops government program, to hunted when the program became too hot and transformed into the Nowhere Man when called to help someone truly in trouble. Through all the iterations, he fought to maintain his humanity culminating here. The first third is almost non-stop jaw dropping intense action. Looking for an ugly scrappy Chihuahua leads into a case with momentous implications for all of us. And as he goes in full Nowhere Man mode, the incidental interactions with his protege, the people in his condo and others show a profound depth that has slowly changed him. Highly recommended. Even though you could totally enjoy reading this as a standalone, reading the series is a true adventure.
