I picked this up from a Danmei display because of how the characters are looking at each other. The energy matched in the book.
This book was way more than a romance. The focus was really on world building. A rich story and environment, establishing relationships, dynamics, personalities. Romance just happens to be building pressure. Like real life, they’ve got their own lives and motivations.
Some things I predicted, but it in no way took anything away from the story for me. Really I was just excited to be correct. As soon as I hit the last page, I was ordering book 2 (and kicking myself for not ordering sooner)

Moderate: Slavery, Suicide, Suicide attempt, Alcohol
Minor: Genocide, Sexual content, Violence
Much of the violence is involving the supernatural. Some of the selected content warnings are described as happening many centuries in the past for relevant world building.
