The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney

1.0

This is the first book Kinney wrote using an established story structure, so he says. (He knew it was going to be turned into a movie, so I guess he thought he'd make it a bit easier for the scriptwriters.)
He has made use of one of the oldest comic structures as a wrapper plot -- that of the comic journey, which has been around at least as long as Don Quixote. We've seen it more recently in films such as Little Miss Sunshine.

My daughter is a huge fan of this series which is why I'm reading it -- she's read them all numerous times and often makes references to Wimpy Kid hijinks. I can credit Wimpy Kid for her suddenly being able to spell after the course of a two or three month Wimpy Kid boon.

Personally I find much of the ideology expressed in this series hard to stomach.
