See You in the Cosmos
by Jack Cheng
First Read: August 6, 2020 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ~ I absolutely enjoyed this wonderful middle grade novel! I didn't expect to love it as much as I do. There were many times that I laughed so hard and almost cried. Alex as a MC was so enjoyable to follow because of his naive and innocent nature, his pure heart for others around him, and his ambition to follow his dreams. Despite the book being for middle grade, I believe everyone from all ages will gravitate towards this wonderful book. There are important themes demonstrated very well to a middle grade demographic such has mental health, broken families, etc. I also appreciate the small filipino representation. My only small complaint is the unique way this book was written. I didn't love how it was told at first, but I think it fits with the plot. Although this is technically a contemporary, I feel as though this book felt really whimsical and magical. Alex became one of my favorite characters to read about so far this year and this book became one of my favorites as well. This will always have a special place in my heart and I hope this book gets more hype than it deserves.

Second Read: March 13, 2025 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (1/2) ~ Read this book for the first time 5 years ago. Remember loving it & how much it meant to me. It still stood by me til this day. Knew I wanted to re-read it. I'm so glad I was able to annotate some of my favorite scenes and quotes. This book still stands the test of time! It's technically written for kids, but I think we can get alot out of it as adults. It teaches you innocence is literally bliss. It teaches you the truth does matter even if it's hard to tell the truth. Broken families doesn't mean it's not possible to mend again. And that mental health is important to take care of so we can be our better selves to our loved ones. As much as I still love everything about this book, I have to dock down half a point, only because it was a little slow in the beginning. But other than, that once the story picked up, I was reminded how much I love this story. I love Alex and Carl Sagan. I love Terra for being willing to be there for Alex even if she barely knows him. It's the perfect middle grade for sure! Recommend to everyone!
