The Winter Garden Mystery by Carola Dunn

4.0

This was a fun listen. It took me a bit of time to not get aggravated at what felt like an overuse of all of the slang from that timeframe, but I can see how the author felt it necessary. I know now why my grandmother used to get irritated and ask us not to use so much slang around her when we were kids. Once I settled into the rhythm and the story really took off, I enjoyed the book.
I like books where the main character has gumption to buck the system and set out on a life of their own. Even when no one else understands why they feel the need to do so, instead of being a good girl or boy and toe the line. There are actually several characters in this book who show gumption even if it takes them a bit to find their way.
The mystery is well-done and the investigation is fairly evenly distributed between the main character, Daisy the amateur sleuth, and Alec, the Scotland Yard detective.
I look forward to more time with these characters and see what else Daisy gets up to.
I can definitely recommend this book, likely this series and author.
