The Creeps by John Connolly

4.0

Nurd and Wormwood, once residing in the outskirts of Hell, now find themselves house guests in Samuel Johnson's mum's house. Nurd continues his revolutionary work as a crash test...man, and Sam has embarked on an equally dangerous stint as Lucy Highmore's boyfriend. All is not well in the Multiverse however.

The Great Malevolence misses? Ba'al, now known as Mrs. Abernathy and has sent a globular demon with the ability to slide through the cracks in space (and a rather topping hat) to gather up his second in commands hateful particles to reassemble her, but something seems to be missing...

Nurd and Wormwood are prisoners still, even if in more pleasant circumstances than their residence in Hell, they are still cooped up in Mrs. Johnson's house, unable to travel the world for fear of their still not quite human (and in the case of Wormwood rather flammable) appearances. Although Nurd relishes his friendship with Samuel he also yearns for something more.

And the statue of Hilary Mould, chief designer of Biddlecomb's oddest buildings, including a battlefield memorial, cemetery and insane asylum, is moving about town a bit more freely than inanimate objects strictly should do. At the center of this mystery is the newly re-opening Wreckit and Son's toy store, where something sinister speaks from the walls.

Finally, a dark and creeping presence, worse even than the Great Malevolence, lurks at the ever weakening threshold from the black space between universes, longing to put out the light and life of the entire Multiverse.

Will Samuel, Nurd and Boswell be able to face down this new threat? Will the Great Malevolence succumb to hope? Will a bottle of beer mean the difference between life and death?

Maybe.

The ending of this novel seems to conclude the series, I found it satisfying if a bit melancholy. I do hate partings.
