The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

5.0

A childhood decision haunts Amir, and as an adult he finally decides to confront his past and return to Afghanistan to redeem himself.

The writing is beautiful, the story is soul-destroying on so many levels - the forced loss of childhood, the sacrifices made by immigrants who have fled their country and the grief of returning to that beloved country and finding it utterly changed (for the worse). I thought this novel really encapsulated the utter devastation and cultural loss that Afghanistan has endured in the last 50 or so years.
