The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde
4.0
This is my first one of Oscar Wilde's works and it did not disappoint! This novella was about Sir Simon and how his persistent hauntings were thwarted when a pack of Americans moved into his house, resisting all his attempts to scare them.
I found myself rooting for the ghost throughout most of this book, though as the story gradually unfolds we learn that he isn't such a grumpy old man as a cruel killer (although, to be fair, I was still rooting for him in the end). I felt for him as his every haunting was ruined by twin boys who are probably more bloodthirsty than he could ever be but I liked how he and Virginia developed a sort of understanding.
Oscar Wilde's writing blew me away. The humour was very subtle but always there (I loved the bit about the ghost stealing Virginia's paints) as he pokes fun of Americans, the British, artists, rich, poor and everyone in between. I wasn't blown away by the ending but I did think it rounded off the story nicely.
Now to move onto Wilde's more popular works.
4 stars!
