The Years That Matter Most: How College Makes or Breaks Us by Paul Tough

5.0

What a wildly complete book!

Tough addresses college in modern America from so many angles. He examines how students end up there, which students end up there, how do testing and admissions play into it, what alternatives are there, what's behind the student debt crises, how do students successfully graduate, and why the heck should we care?

Every time you feel comfortable or confident in some study or anecdote the author cites, he complicates that comfort with its shortcomings, oversights, or contradictions. Mostly, he shows how there is no simple solution to issues around higher ed but there are best practices and there are trends. Knowing those broad themes is important for any educator, parent, or student.

Ultimately, this was just an invigorating book. It highlighted so much about what education is and how it affects us. I want to make everyone I know read this, which is a sure sign of a five-star volume if there ever was one.
