Blood Mercy
by Vela Roth
I have no idea how to rate this book. I have never been so torn between loving a book and hating it. The plot is good! I love the spin on vampires. I love our main girl and her journey from a submissive, terrified girl to a strong, confident, badass woman. I also love our man main. I really love how sensitive and sweet he is. There is also a hint that he has some serious protectiveness about him which I love. I also love that he allowed Cassia space and time to figure things out on her own. He was supportive without pushing her.
The biggest drawback is the length of this book. It seriously was so wrong and for no good reason. This book had a TON of dialogue. Pages and pages and pages of the characters going back and forth. I wish there had been a better/different way for the author to world-build beyond just telling us about it. I am hoping in the next book the world will start making more sense since Lio will be in his own land and I'll be able to better grasp how his world works.
I also found the Hespians (?) hard to really bond with. They spoke SO formally to each other. I found myself wondering if their land was incredibly boring. They're all perfect and loving and speak without causing offense. I kept hoping their group might fight just so I could get a sense of their true feelings.
I will say the slow burn was real in this book. Which, again, was good and bad. By the time our characters decided to intimate they had a very strong foundation for their relationship. But also they never really shared very many deep moments like I was hoping they would. They mostly just spoke about Lio's world and how everything worked there. The spice in this book was fantastic and perfect for our characters.
In summary, this book should've been 5 stars. It had almost everything I want in a book. A strong female lead with just enough trauma to be relatable. A sensitive smart guy. Magic, vampires, an evil king, slow burn, spice. But it was just WAY TO LONG!! I will be continuing the series but may have to start skim-reading if there is going to be so much dialogue and not a lot of action.
