This book was not good. Brody is a jealous jerk, Ellen cheats, and Hooper is also unlikeable. Most of the book is taken up by the affair and the terribly written flirtation and sex scene screams “how not to write female characters”. Or sex scenes. Seriously, she’d think of rape and sometimes find herself “rubbing her vagina”? Sounds like the author needs an anatomy lesson at the very least.
I was really disappointed with this and I hope reading it hadn’t ruined my enjoyment of the movie by remembering the source material. Spielberg wrote a tight script with good characters. Maybe Benchley thought character conflict had to exist to create story tension. If so, he did it poorly. Maybe there would have been more tension had I cared about any of his characters.
If you have no driving desire to read source material that inverts everything you love about the movie, avoid this.
