The Low, Low Woods by Carmen Maria Machado
4.0

Wow, I don't think I've read a horror graphic novel nearly as successful as this one yet! The story and the artwork cooperate so well to develop atmosphere, mood, and just altogether a truly gripping story. I couldn't put it down!

The story follows El and Octavia, two young queer best friends growing up in an old mining town where the mines caught fire and haven't stopped burning underground for decades. Weird shit happens in their town, but the frequent disappearance and reappearance of women is a widely known secret. When El and Octavia wake up in a theatre after going to see a movie, knowing full well that they're missing time, their friendship begins to strain with the tension of whether they truly want to remember what happened. Or if they want to forget what they forgot.

This comic is full of monsters, body horror, thrills, mid-90s fall vibes, and unabashed feminism. I'll especially remember the witch for a long time coming. My tiny qualms with a couple of inconsistencies are just that--tiny. They didn't impede my enjoyment at all, so you should pick this up if you're looking for a gory lil trip through a small town with a big secret.

cw: mentions of sexual violence, non-gratuitous sexual assault (I wasn't triggered, and this is typically a trigger for me, but everyone is different, so please take care of yourself ❤️)
