Affinity by Sarah Waters

MAJOR SPOILERS

My friend Ruth lent me this saying that it was very me and I had to read it and she was RIGHT, and I especially enjoyed reading it at this time of year and feeling all the more spooky. This is the first Sarah Waters I've read without knowing the twist beforehand (no BBC adaptation, no problem) and it was FANTASTIC, I literally went 'aaawwwwhwhwhhwwhwhhh!' when it happened. Butch working class maid forcibly and sneakily redistributing ladies' wealth? GET IN. I admire the way that the writing made me yearn as strongly for what she was saying to be true as Peggy did, and I was *so* *shocked* at the reveal that Selina had been totally false with Peggy - but then I realised that this literally happens every Sarah Waters book so I shouldn't be shocked really. Then I was thinking about the tragic OR EVIL lesbian trope and how ironic it is that it literally won't die, and I felt a bit mad at Sarah Waters for perpetuating it so continually. In the light of day, it was a good ride and I'm glad I took it, but deep down I want more from dyke literature in general. It was still fun though :)
