The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir who got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe by Romain Puértolas

2.0

Good premise. Falls flat. Adventure.

Story : When Ajatashatru visits an IKEA in France, little does he suspect that over the next 24 hours he will travel to multiple countries, meet new people from around the world and experience life in many ways.

Language: This book reads like a cozy adventure novel featuring a male protagonist. It's quirky and witty and light. Unfortunately that's just the first half of the novel. The second half falls flat, relying on the flawed and lacking and sometimes questionable aspects from the first half and closes the novel out with similar lack of style or coziness.

Characters: Aja is a fakir from India who has schemed money out of his townsfolk so he can visit IKEA in France. He is naive and bumbling and amusing.

I had high hopes for this novel and for the most part enjoyed the first half of the book. But the second half fell flat and I didn't care for the writing style. It's still a decent debut novel and worth a try.
