Esio Trot by Roald Dahl
2.0

Mr. Hopper lives above widowed Mrs. Silver. He is in love with her but he's too shy to tell her. When she wishes that her tortoise, Alfie, would get bigger, and faster, Mr. Hopper comes up with a plan that will win the heart of Mrs. Silver. But what is Mr. Hopper’s plan? And will it work?

I didn't particularly like this book and I found the story rather bizarre. The way Mr. Hopper goes about with his plan is devious, deceptive and not the way you're supposed to start a relationship. Plus, it was rather a drawn-out way to go about things rather than just telling Mrs. Silver his feelings.

The story is about how clever men are, how stupid women are and how interchangeable pets are. It also comes across as all of this is okay, and a perfectly okay way to start a relationship. A relationship that went from 0-100 by a simple question.

I'm glad I never read this as a child, and I doubt I'll ever read it again.
