The Rose Society by Marie Lu
5.0
This was such a fantastic follow-up to [b:The Young Elites|20821111|The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1)|Marie Lu|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1407318399s/20821111.jpg|25217978]! The first half of the book mostly focuses on Adelina recruiting new elites and building her own team, The Rose Society, to counteract the Daggers. The second part is all about vengeance.
The series gets darker and darker as Adelina grows more powerful. Adelina's internal struggle was very interesting to read. She is out for blood. She is out for vengeance. She is on a quest to seek revenge for all those who caused her pain, and with it comes. But her thirst is actually tipping more on blood lust, rather than justification for every wrong thing done to her. The background given from the first book explains how powerless she feels, and thus, there is a need for her to strike back and to ensure that she will never be in that position again.
But everything's not as easy as it seems. She's constantly struggling to keep her walls up and cut her emotional ties, for fear of rejection. And like every character going down that dark path, she's slowly losing her humanity in the process. Add to that these paranoias brought about by her own illusions.
[a:Marie Lu|4342215|Marie Lu|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1285032806p2/4342215.jpg]'s style in this series took a different level from the Legend series. She has this way of sucking you into the story and at times, I feel a certain pull as Adelina creates her illusions... like I'm experiencing the illusions myself... like I'm suffocated. That's how deeply engrossed I am with the story and it's so great how Lu's writing style was able to do that. Add to that her genius plot. She continuously surprises me on where she takes the story. Lastly, I applaud the characters she created. All throughout the story, I don't know who to root for. Every one seems to have something up their sleeves.
Marie Lu really knows how to write those last chapters (special props to the last three sentences, that was just beautifully written). The revelation at the end was mind-blowing and it again opened so many possibilities for the next book. Add to that the many questions in my mind: How far is Adelina willing to go? How much humanity is actually left in her? While the first one paved the way for our anti-hero, and this book focused on her succumbing to the darkness, is the last book going to be about her redemption?? I can't wait to read the next book!!
Why can't I be the one to strike first, to hit so early and with such fury that my enemies cower before they can ever think of turning on me?
What is so great about being good?

Once upon a time, a girl had a father, a prince, a society of friends. Then they betrayed her, and she destroyed them all.
