American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
2.0

If I could give this book a 1.5 I would have done. It's meandering at best, and utterly self-indulgent at worst.

Following an entirely unsympathetic character for close to 400 pages was exhausting, with this constant nag from Ellis as he commentates on the problems materialism and corporate America. I could almost hear him repetitively saying "Do you get it?!" in my head by the half way mark. As he spends page after page describing the shallowness of the characters as well as the world they live in.

Ultimately, the books criticisms of consumerism are a notion I entirely agree with, but the book itself fails to get into anything more than a superficial critique of pointing out how bland individuals interested in nothing but the material really are.

It's actually a credit to the film to cut out most of this book and focus more or less on the first 120ish pages. Just watch the film and save yourself the hassle.
