Gunmetal Magic
by Ilona Andrews
Mon avis en français
I really love the Kate Daniels series. When I learned that Andrea had her own full length novel, I was torn between excitement and fear. I already liked her and thought she was a great kick-ass character. I also wanted to know what would happen with her and Raphael. But a whole book in Kate Daniel's universe without Kate and Curran's banter? I was not sure I could make it. What a fool I was.
This novel is actually not that much different from a regular Kate Daniel's book. It bears all the trademarks of the series, like a lot of twists and turns, imaginative creatures, a unique and fascinating mythology and a razor sharp humor. Once again, the story kept me on tenterhooks. I enjoyed going following the steps of Andrea from the beginning to the end.
I think that she's one of the few characters who's not overshadowed by Kate. She's as intriguing and strong, but a bit more reserved. But in this book, we get to know more about her, her past and her fear. It was great to understand why she so strongly rejected everything related to shapeshifters and see how she slowly accepts who she is. It's with a lot of sensibility that Ilona Andrews managed here to create emotions in the middle of an action packed plot.
And like in every Kate Daniels book, there is a lot of funny secondary characters. Jim, Derek, and Doolittle are here, of course, but as Andrea is not a mythology and magical expert like Kate, she has to require help from "friends". That's where Roman steps in. This not so evil mage finally loses the Russian accent and shows some unsuspected and hilarious talents for flirting. Ascanio, the delinguent Bouda intern is also one of Andrea's sidekicks. Yes he's just a teenager but he's so charming, wicked (in a good way) and funny that I have a slight crush on him. And of course you can't talk about Andrea without talking about her again/off again love Raphael. After book 4 and 5, I was looking forward to see what would happen between them. Let's just say that I was not disappointed with that dash of romance. Their mating dance is as bumpy as Kate and Curran's, but when two shapeshifters are involved, the crazy mating rules are at an all new high ;)
