Nya's Long Walk: A Step at a Time by Linda Sue Park

This picture book companion to Linda Sue Park's novel A LONG WALK TO WATER is a great introduction and scaffolding for the plight of villagers in South Sudan and around the world who do not have access to clean water. With simple text and evocative illustrations, this book illuminates the journey of two sisters fetching the day's water, half a morning's walk away from their village. When Akeer takes ill on the way back, Nya has to carry her sister and the water all the way back, a feat she doesn't think she can do. But one step at a time she makes it happen.

Not only would this be a great introduction to Park's novel, it's a story about perseverance and based on real events that happen in our world today.
