The Lost Plot by Genevieve Cogman
5.0
This is the fourth book in The Invisible Library series. Paraphrasing my comments on previous installments.... I find the series, its characters, and the central conceit of the mysterious Library to be a delight. All those comments still hold true. Major spoilers ahead.
About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).
Spoiler
I found the ending especially strong, partly because of the way it handled the characters of Qing Song and Hu (introduced in this fourth book), but mostly because of how much I like both Irene and Kai, and therefore how much I care about what happens between them. I know that the ending won't affect all readers the same way. Indeed maybe it will only affect a few readers strongly. But, for me, as I read the ending, everything except the book became secondary -- the book became the world and I wanted to stay in it forever. And because of that ending, I am giving the book a fifth star.About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying.
