The Lost Plot by Genevieve Cogman

5.0

This is the fourth book in The Invisible Library series. Paraphrasing my comments on previous installments.... I find the series, its characters, and the central conceit of the mysterious Library to be a delight. All those comments still hold true. Major spoilers ahead.
SpoilerI found the ending especially strong, partly because of the way it handled the characters of Qing Song and Hu (introduced in this fourth book), but mostly because of how much I like both Irene and Kai, and therefore how much I care about what happens between them. I know that the ending won't affect all readers the same way. Indeed maybe it will only affect a few readers strongly. But, for me, as I read the ending, everything except the book became secondary -- the book became the world and I wanted to stay in it forever. And because of that ending, I am giving the book a fifth star.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).
