A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

I really enjoyed this book a great deal. Very very well written. It's "my kind" of book meaning it is not plot driven but character driven. It is about daily life of 'ordinary' people, my favorite subject. The importance of the tiny things in our memories. My favorite was how forgiving the narrator is of her parents' failings and the failings of others - felt almost Huckleberry Finn like in that aspect of an innocent without prejudice trying to make sense of a judgmental world.

The only complaint is that the last few chapters changed in tone. They were written more choppy, more piecemeal and lacked the same flow as the rest of the book. Felt like she was rushing to get the character to the "end"/milestone/a certain age.

Highly recommend it for teen girls (maybe even 10 year old depending on your comfort with the subjects discussed).
