When He's Dark
by Suzanne Wright
Ole faithful Suzanne Wright
-m/f
-shifters
-HEA
-steamy
-no cheating but there is some OW/OM drama
-stand-alone in interconnected series. Can be read by itself but it’s best to read the Phoenix pack series, then the Memphis pack series first to know who a lot of the secondary characters are
Suzanne Wright is a one-click purchase for me. I’ve read both her Phoenix pack and Memphis Pack series and absolutely loved them. There’s something about mate bonds, shifters and some good mystery/angst that just make my little heart so happy. So, when I saw that she had a new series about the Olympus Pride, I of course, had to snatch it up. Are these books predictable? Absolutely. Suzanne Wright definitely follows a pattern with her books, but to me, that doesn’t take away from the enjoyability. I like reading these books when I need a safe and steamy as hell read to cleanse my palate from some of the dark/more angsty books I tend to read. Sometimes you just want a book where you know you’re getting that HEA.
This is book 1 in the Olympus Pride series. Bree is a Pallas cat and Alex is a Wolverine. We’ve learned some about Pallas Cats in the Memphis series so it’s nice to see a series starting that revolves around the couples in their pride. We hadn’t seen really anything about Wolverines until this book and let me just say, they’re awesome. The wolves will always have my heart but wolverines are definitely a close second. It was also nice to read about another couple that were not fated mates, but mated through imprinting. If you’ve read the other two series, almost every single couple were true mates, and I’ve always worried about how I would feel reading about imprinting because I cannot stand books when one of the main characters pines for someone else, and I kept thinking, well how can they love someone as much as they would their predestined mate? But honestly, Suzanne wrote their love story so flawlessly that it never felt like they WERENT true mates.
Bree found her true mate when she was very young, but unfortunately, her true mate was a psychopath, literally. He left the pride when she was still a young teen and she couldn’t have been happier about that. Alex, is the cousin of Brees true mate and also 12 years older than her. His true mate died before they ever had the chance to mate. Even though him and Bree have always had a ton of sexual tension, they never acted on anything. Now, boy does Alex act on his feelings. He’s done denying what he wants, and what he wants is Bree. But that’s not so easy when her psychopath true mate, who she believes is dead, starts making his presence known and makes it clear that while he doesn’t want her, no one else will have her either. There’s definitely some mystery/suspense in the sense of… is Paxton still alive and after Bree? Or is someone pretending to be him for other sinister reasons? Who keeps trying to send loners to kidnap her and why? It was an interesting story that kept me engaged from start to finish, as all of Suzannes books do. I also really enjoyed reading about an omega. In the other two series all of the females were very dominant, and didn’t like their men bossing then around, especially in the bedroom. And while I definitely enjoyed that, it was nice reading about Bree who seemed to have no issues submitting control to Alex, especially in the bedroom. Now, don’t get me wrong, Bree is no doormat. She’s independent and has a no-nonsense/blunt approach, but she also seemed to have a more clear head about her own safety because she wasn’t constantly trying to prove that she was strong and dominant when her man tried to protect her like most of the other female main characters did. I’m a pretty independent woman, but it’s still nice to know your man can protect you if needed, and also being smart enough to know when it’s your time to fight, and when it’s your time to allow your man to protect you WITHOUT fighting him over it.
I deducted a star simply for the fact that there were quite a few editing errors. It didn’t ruin the story or anything, but I did find myself having to reread a sentence a couple of times. Also, I would have liked to learn more about the pride itself. I’m assuming it’s very similar to that of the wolves, as in theres an alpha, betas, enforcers, and omegas. But in the pride, Bree explained that Pallas cat omegas weren’t regular old omegas like in the wolf packs. they could be omegas or betas, and that she couldn’t be forced into submission. Unless I misread that part and that’s just her, not the omegas in general. We learned a little about the pride in the Memphis series, but again, I would have liked to see a little more about the differences in their pride compared to the other shifter lines. And to have learned a little more about their territory set up. But maybe we will get more of that in the next book since it’s about an alpha.
Anywayssss, this was a great read and I’m heading off to read the next. I’m still holding out hope we see the children of the Phoenix and Memphis packs get their own series, it was nice seeing snippets of them in this book. Can’t believe Kye is already 18!!!! And that Nick is still getting into stare downs with him after alllll these years
