The Last Bear by Hannah Gold

This book does contain the effects of grief and loss, unintended child neglection, the effects of polution and global warming on animals and their habitat.

This book was absolutely beautiful! I loved April's character. She was curious, smart and really caring.

April was told that there were no polar bears left on Bear Island, but of course, she refused to believe that. She made it her mission to find a polar bear, and that she did. One polar bear, stuck on Bear Island, away from his family and others of his kind.

The relationship between April and her father isn't easy. He's still wrapped up in his grief and doesn't pay as much attention to April as she'd like. I do feel sorry for both of them but I do love how April chose to try to understand him better, even if sometimes she did get angry at him.

Although an incredibly warm story, it was also quite heartbreaking. Especially that ending, oh my! The tears I shed - we shan't speak of it.

The Last Bear is a beautiful middle grade novel that one can connect with deeply, even if you are not of the intended age. Suited for adults and children alike, this book will make you laugh, smile and cry.

For a debut novel, Hannah Gold has certainly left quite an impression and I do look forward to reading her future works! Gold's writing was easy to read, smooth and nicely descriptive. The characters and story in which she created were really well done and readers can definitely feel a connection.

I'd also like to point out the illustrations within this book. They were absolutely stunning! Sometimes I just stopped reading to look at the illustrations!
