The Gene: An Intimate History
by Siddhartha Mukherjee
informative
reflective
medium-paced
The first half or so, on the history of genes and the study of genetics, was dull. The latter half, where Mukherjee got into the impact of genes on health, intelligence, and sexual preference, was much more interesting (Genetics play at least a role in sexuality and there is no racial difference in intellect, so suck it, racists and homophobes.).
Minus 0.5 point for incorrect use of the word “moot” (c’mon, editing team).
I’ve heard higher praise for Mukherjee’s ‘The Emperor of All Maladies’ and I plan to check that out. Recommend for those into health and science nonfiction. Don’t recommend for everyone else.
