🚨SPOILERS BELOW🚨
The series started off great; the plot was easy to get into and the writing was good. I blew through book 1 in a day. Then book 2 came and it dragged for me. Why did we need all of those POVs?! Why did we need nearly 50% of the book just to detail Orlaith’s journey at sea to Bahari. Book 2 felt like a jumbled mess. There were points when I honestly had no idea what was going on. I felt myself losing interest but pushed through because I wanted to make it to book 3 since I knew from reading a spoiler that book 3 is when Orlaith and Rhordyn finally do it. The first sex scene did not disappoint. What did disappoint, however, was the fact that Rhordyn doesn’t even make an appearance until about 60% in and the sex scene doesn’t happens until the last two chapters. Book 3 was frustrating for me. It felt like Orilath couldn’t catch a break. Like why did there have to be so much suffering and violence? WHY?! But what really irked me was the fact that for 3 full books, we’ve seen Orilath spiral deeper into herself/her depression. A major source of that is her “realization” in book 2 that she killed her mom. However, at the end of book 3 when Rhordyn finally tells her he was the one who killed her mom there is no discussion, no time to heal, Orlaith is suddenly magically cured and I kid you not, like 2 pages after that is when the sex ensues.
I had really high hopes for this series but I don’t think I will continue. The books are very long and it feels like there's more and more filler scenes. Also Orlaith’s character development, or lack thereof, really started to grate on me. Lastly the books just got very… dark. That being said I would try a different book/series by this author because the writing was good!
