While I enjoyed the mystery story itself, the treatment of the female characters by the other characters and the author himself made me sick to my stomach. Only in the last pages does the author acknowledge the only female character as literally “not a doll” and someone who had her own thoughts and feelings. Not enough was done to condemn her awful treatment, how she was confined and kept ignorant and then preyed upon by men who acknowledged she had the mental capacity of a child. I appreciate that it’s an unreliable narrator but why was everyone else ok with her treatment? This is not as empathetic a book as The Decagon House Murders, which I enjoyed much more.
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Child abuse, Confinement
