Compass and Blade by Rachel Greenlaw

2.0

I read this book aloud to Alice and it was...not that great. It was probably hampered by the fact we were only reading a chapter a night and that we had some breaks while we were on vacation but towards the end both of us were yelling at the protagonist to STOP TALKING AND MOVE! Mira spends lots of time thinking extremely repetitive thoughts--repetitive in the moment in that there are 4 sentences that are variations on the exact same thought, and repetitive over the course of the book--like how many times can she realize that Seth has a secret and she can't trust him? I dunno, when my not even 12 year old is struggling with that... Also, this is not really a stand alone book, clearly meant to be the first in a series, so the pacing drags. I wish we had more introduction to the magic of the world so we wanted to stay longer with this series. Probably won't be looking for the rest of the books in this series.
