i feel bad hating on middle grade books because it really is my fault for reading them but this is my rating of my experience. messenger definitely not as bad as the disaster that was gathering blue. it was a lot more intriguing in the beginning and less obvious and clear cut. however, there were so many random plot points that never went anywhere, were never explained, and made no sense. we don't find out why the village randomly started to suck or why Kira's village randomly started not to suck. or why they're bringing Kira to their village that sucks instead of going to stay with her at her village that doesn't suck. around the halfway point things really slowed down with the endless journey back through the Forest that was supposed to be tense and climactic but was just boring. and of course the ending sucked. i was waiting for some kind of reckoning with what the people have done but no matty just died for their sins and all is well now. man i hate that so much.
also it was disturbing to me how matty was taught to "speak proper" and lose his dialect. like what are we saying here. in a book about building walls to keep people out of your super accepting immigrant society. might as well read sons at this point though. 👎
