The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers by Sinéad Gleeson

4.0

This is a comprehensive and well planned selection of authors, some well known but older and out of fashion, through to the up and coming newer writers of north and south. There are strong underlying themes of women suffering in silence, coming to terms with life's tragedies, and showing a steely inner strength, almost subversive rebellion in some instances. Only one story is written from a male perspective. It provides a taster of some new writers that I'm keen to explore more of. Most, but not all, deliver the concise and crafted prose that a short story can exploit to best effect. I enjoyed this a lot.
