The Woman from Uruguay by Pedro Mairal
3.0

Started reading this in the summer, put it away, came back in December. Quite liked it.

Yes, it's a novel about a professor cheating on his wife, but it's not the sort of needy/hysterical thing you're thinking of. It's not a cheap Philip Roth knockoff. We get to see an interesting part of the world (Argentinian taking a ferry to Montevideo to take advantage of Uruguayan currency exchange), and it's a good way of exploring a broader social context.

The author is really good at foreshadowing. I think that's because it tricks you into thinking it's a plotless, meandering book sometimes. But it's not. But that said, the highlight of the book is the narrator's voice, the way he comments on the world around him and shows you his take on things. I liked it. It's not laugh-out-loud funny or anything, but it's humorous.
