The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen
5.0

I really enjoyed the world building that Margaret Owen did in order to give Fie a world to live in. There's a caste system where people have inherent powers (or the lack thereof) because of which caste they were born into. Fie was born a Crow, the lowest of the castes. The caste system is a really good antagonist for the story - it shows how easy it is to just give in because "that's the way it's always been done" - and it doesn't feel forced or arbitrary. Even with magic thrown into the mix, it feels like a world I could just step into.
The characters take a bit of time to find their groove, though, especially the prince and his body guard. Fie, the main character, feels very real as does her anger. And she has a right to be anger over...well, pretty much everything that has and will happen to her throughout the story. Her people have done nothing wrong and do the world a great service (taking care of the people that suffer from the plague), yet they are constantly harassed or looked down upon by everyone.
There is a love story woven into the mix which I usually balk at because of how we have to "find the one and then it'll be all okay", but that's not how it works in this book. Things aren't magically okay after that and Fie already had her power and abilities and sensibilities before finally admitting she liked the guy.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the second book in the series to come out!
