Our Crooked Hearts
by Melissa Albert
I really enjoyed the plot of Our Crooked Hearts! It spoke directly to the child in ne that always wished I'd one day find out I was a witch-not in the cutesy Harry Potter kind of way, but in a Dame Alice Kyteler kind of way. Albert wrapped this witchy plot around the strained and contentious relationship many young women have with their mothers, exploring the guilt and anger that are the result of constraints put in place without explanation. Additionally, there is exploration of toxic friend groups, the weight of secrets upon romantic partnerships, and the danger of ambition outgrowing logic and caution. The overarching story pits evil against a set of neutral protagonists, which adds a much more realistic feel to the dynamic and allows for more character development. I also love that while we were provided with a satisfying ending, it wasn't technically a happily ever after but more of a happy for now, there's still issues, but those are for tomorrow after.
