The Midwife's Apprentice
by Karen Cushman
Reread this today, after pulling it to look up a quote. I had forgotten how unsympathetic the midwife is in this - she spends pretty much the entire book treating Alyce with the bare minimum of human decency. Which is both upsetting and entirely plausible, i guess; as a kid, i certainly wasn't surprised by the idea that adults could be capricious and cruel. It's much more upsetting to me now that it was to me-at-thirteen, which is probably a pretty fair commentary on the urge adults have to protect kids from the world.
