The Way of Kings, Part Two by Brandon Sanderson

4.5

4.5 stars.

The second half of The Way of Kings really tested my resolve to get through this book. The chapters were longer and often introspective, requiring my full attention.

The multiple perspective format really started to grate on me. Each chapter felt very self contained, with a beginning, climax, and end, so momentum would build and then resolve and by the beginning of the next chapter you’d have to build up that momentum again, which made for a very stop-and-start sort of reading experience. I found it easier to put down the book between chapters than to keep reading, even though I was enjoying what I was reading while I read it.

In spite of my issues with the pacing, the story was well-written and well-developed over the course of the novel. Each scene felt intentionally placed and served a purpose, which is really impressive for a book of this size!

The characters finally started to grow on me during this second half. After spending so much time with them, I became more and more attached, slowly, almost imperceptibly, until the very end where I was cheering for each in turn.

What a way to end a book! The ending was packed full of twists and turns, resolutions and revelations! I couldn’t stop turning pages for the last 150 pages or so. I have finally experienced my first Sanderlanche!
