Another day, another book that I'm so glad I went into blind. This book was so beautiful and I am certainly looking forward to the rest of the trilogy! Real rating of a 4.5.
This book was so magically captivating in a variety of ways. From the beautiful legends told between characters to the smallest of details that really brought the characters alive (like the Midnight Merchant's blue robes that shimmer like a night sky), I loved this book! The jinn added such a cool aspect to the story and seeing the division over ethics related to the treatment of jinn made for some interesting character arcs.
I loved having strong female characters and an adventure across the desert full of peril that put a strain on relationships and changed the group's dynamics. It's rare that I love all of the main characters in a book equally, but each one had such an interesting backstory, and watching them being forced to work together was wonderful. The desert truly came alive in this book.
My only complaint would be that the first 3/4ths of the story dragged on a little bit and was a bit boring at times. I know it can't be easy to make a desert journey interesting for its entirety, but the book could've done with a little less length to speed things along just enough to keep you captivated from page one until the end. The ending was fast-paced and I was completely sucked in those last few chapters and it left me wanting more. The writing style was beautiful and beyond the slower pacing, it was truly a fantastic book that I can't recommend enough. There are many quotes in this book that readers will relate to and find themselves highlighting as there is advice and important thoughts around every corner.
Overall, I cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy as I loved this book! I recommend all fantasy readers give this retelling a chance because you too will be captivated and transported into a captivating desert world full of magic and deception!
