The Coven
by Harper L. Woods
This book was so good!!! I devoured it in less than a day and may have had a minor meltdown with the ending... This was a unique story about a young witch who grew up outside of her coven after her mother faked her own death and escaped before her birth. Willow has grown up knowing that she is to play the major role in taking down the Coven and the Vessels, demon spirits trapped in spelled human-looking bodies who feed on the blood of witches in which is the magic that keeps their vessels strong, who protect it and the Covenant, two witches who used to lead the Coven and were brought back from the dead to lead it again, who have power over it. Her parents both have had horrible experiences at the hands of the Coven, which has become corrupted over the centuries, and decide to train her to be its downfall. She is brought to the school for witches, after it is opened up to the outside for the first time in 50 years, since a massacre took place that killed a bunch of students and wounded several Vessels and the school was shut down by the witch council. This is the first time in 50 years that young witches from outside will be allowed to attend as students, and Willow is one of them.
This was such a unique take on the witch/demon story and I absolutely loved the interactive nature of Willow's magic and how it was described in this book. How the earth and plants around her helped Willow physically in every situation because of their symbiotic relationship. I loved the descriptions and explanations about how the magic works; the earth and plants give Willow her magic and in return she gives them an offering of her blood and magic in it to help the earth thrive and the plants grow, and they in turn help her and protect her, and when she dies, her body will be returned to the earth for it to absorb her body and magic back into itself. This was just one of the types of magic in this book and the main magic that Willow possesses as a Green. There were also Reds, Greys, Blues, Whites, and Blacks (there may have been more, but not all were explained in depth), each possessing a different type of magic. Willow was born of two bloodlines, so in addition to her Green status, she was also a Black or a necromancer. This plays a huge part in the role forced upon Willow by her father, and the farther you read, the more it all makes sense.
Willow is such an interesting character. She is fierce and strong and smart and sassy and protective and she has such flair in her attitude. I loved getting to know her and seeing this world through her eyes as she unwillingly goes to fulfill this role her father has beaten into her for her entire life. She doesn't want to participate, but she believes that what she is doing is for the best of everyone. I loved watching Willow try to "seduce" Gray, the Headmaster and lead Vessel at the school, and slowly fall for his charms. Gray was an interesting character, and I am extremely glad that we got a few POVs from him throughout to helps us see into his head and understand his character a bit more. He is gruff and charming and sexy and seductive and strong and smart, and I loved seeing him fall for Willow as well.
This book has SEVERAL twists, especially at the end. I cannot wait for book 2!
