I have not seen the movie. The book was a bit brutal in its imagery, and I have no doubt that such things occurred. This was the first account I have read of a free man being kidnapped and sold into slavery - during this time period. Some of the chapters were not as necessary, such as growing cotton and sugarcane, but I suppose they were left in to give the reader a better sense of what Solomon endured.
