The House of My Mother
by Shari Franke
dark
emotional
medium-paced
Shari Franke is brutally honest in her memoir of being abused and commodified by her mother, who is now in prison for the torture of her 2 youngest children. The family of 8 was the center of a YouTube vlog, and the parents were also pulled into a cult run by a woman claiming to be a life coach and prophet.
Franke does a great job communicating how damaging it is for children to be treated as evil objects, and how her trauma has impacted her life while protecting her younger siblings from further exploitation. Clearly her mother was disturbed and abusive before social media and the influence of a cult leader, but these came together to create a nightmare for these children.
