This is not my typical book, but I really enjoyed this book. This book focuses on the selection process of a professor at Corbin College. While this is a fiction book, the idea came from a story told to the author by the late Harold Bloom. It is based on an experience with Benzion Netanyahu, the father of the Benjamin Netanyahu.
Cohen delves into the controversial philosophy of the elder Netanyahu, as well as the place of the modern Jew in America. This novel is articulate and thought provoking. I especially like the letters of reference for Netanyahu. Cohen provides the typical glowing reference, but he also provides a cautionary letter arguing that Netanyahu is hypocritical in this theories and in his life.
Cohen also includes the exasperating elements of the visit as the family takes advantage of the Blum family’s hospitality. The Netanyahu utilize their Jewishness as a weapon. If you don’t like their behavior, you must be an anti-Semite or lacking class, yet their behavior goes beyond what hospitality calls for. Cohen artfully weaves the ridiculous into the novel to bring levity into the novel.
