Amal Unbound
by Aisha Saeed
4.5 Stars. This was a quick read and an important one at that-it’s essential that we have more diverse books out there and I loved that this one had such a strong female character in it. Something stopped me from giving it 5 Stars though-I think it was just too quickly wrapped up at the end but I truly enjoyed it and will be recommending it to lots of students and teachers. It is part of the Global Read Aloud this Fall and now I can feel really good about participating now that I’ve read the book myself
I first read this book in May 2018 and again from end of October through December with two 5th grade classes as part of the Global Read Aloud. It’s been really neat to experience Amal again with them and hear their thoughts and feelings about her situation. I’ve enjoyed exposing them to a new culture too. I’m changing my review to 5 stars because I truly loved this book but still feel it was wrapped up too quickly.
