The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston
2.0
2.5 stars.
Positive sides: I did enjoy the Starfield universe, it was still great and well constructed. It also tackles well sexism in the sci-fi world (it could’ve been more developed) and it had a great message for the fans who keep harassing and cussing actors because of made up characters, without thinking about the human being inside them — one of the few things I enjoyed.
The negative parts: I didn’t feel connected to the characters or the story. The romance was so rushed, by the middle of the book both couples were just starting to get to know each other better. It also doesn’t really focus on the story? It has so many plots and they get tangled on each other, so she has the timing problem where she can’t develop all of them
The main characters: I liked Jessica’s journey at the end, even though it was pretty bumpy. She didn’t know if she wanted to be oscar famous or a normal person. She wants to be a different Jessica Stone, but not exactly ordinary. It was just confusing; her redemption also felt rushed. And about Imogen, I couldn’t really identify her personality. I felt so detached from her and her choices. She was a shadow of other people, didn’t make choices of her own and she was there only to save Amara.
Maybe I was too hard at this? It was a light romantic comedy for teen fandoms, just wasn’t for me. I really enjoyed Geekerella, so I’m sort of disappointed I didn’t like this.
By the way: how could the fans not notice it wasn’t Jessica? I mean, the book says they’re similar, but not exactly alike. So I’m still intrigued by it.
