The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

3.0

I've been on a serious nautical kick lately! I was a little disappointed in this book, and perhaps it suffered in comparison with the Bloody Jack series I've been reading at the same time. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but my biggest problem was that I felt like the characters and the plot lacked some integrity. The crew takes Charlotte into their midst, but suddenly fails to support her at a crucial moment, and she's left to her own devices? Charlotte also seemed a little unbelievable in some ways--trying to avoid spoilers here, but I'm not sure I can accept that a girl from her social class would adapt that quickly to such a change in status and lifestyle as she experiences, nor make the choice she did at the end of the book. That said, I did actually like the ending, and the story as a whole kept me entertained.
