The Half-Made World by Felix Gilman
4.0

First of all, incredible writing style, worldbuilding, prose, and dialogue. It really immersed me in this world. The orders of Line and Gun are really compelling — the clash of order and chaos backed by literal demons really hit home about the neverending nature of this conflict.

Unfortunately the plot itself left a little to be desired for me. It played well with the world, but wasn't always engaging. I found myself continuing to read more to see what happened to the characters rather than what happened regarding the central mystery (the General). However, I did enjoy the ending, it felt very on-brand with the rest of the book.
