War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi

3.0

War Girls brings us to Nigeria in the year 2172, right in the midst of a civil war. Battles are fought with massive humanoid robots and in order to protect from the radiation filled climate people have outfitted themselves with bionic limbs and artificial organs. War Girls is the story of two sisters, Onyii and Ify, who are torn apart and find themselves on opposite sides of the war. It explores the impact war and violence has on people's lives, particularly the lives of children, innocent children who shouldn’t have to learn how to hold a gun that is bigger than them. War Girls is brutal, action-packed and heartbreaking.

The world Tochi Onyebuchi created was so vivid, all the battles were described in such detail you could see the giant mechs crashing together in midair. However, Onyii and Ify find themselves facing impossible odds and impossible situations. And time and time again they survive. Always they were miraculously saved. Sometimes without any explanation. It seemed very unrealistic and this happened with increasing frequency towards the end.

The plot also felt a little overpacked. So so so much happens between the first and last pages. I was honestly shocked when, after I finished reading and went on over to Goodreads and found out that this is going to be a series. So much happened and so much time was covered, I really thought this was the whole story. Even the ending felt like an ending, it didn’t feel like an end of book 1 ending.

And as far as the romance goes, well, it wasn’t really even a thing until almost the end and it was disappointing because it had the potential to be amazing.
