Bangkok Wakes to Rain
by Pitchaya Sudbanthad
I really wanted to love this novel. The lush imagery and gorgeous language is atmospheric and envelops the reader in the past, present, and future of Bangkok in innovative ways. But the story is fragmented and it was difficult to keep track of the characters and their relationships to each other and the city. I finally understood toward the end of the book that the story hinges on place rather than person, describing the history of a particular house (and later apartment complex) through time. But the staccato nature of the narration left me confused and disconnected from the protagonists. I definitely learned something about Thailand and moments of its history, but this book could have been so much more.
