Life on the Refrigerator Door is a novel written entirely in the form of short notes between mother and daughter left--amazingly--on the door of the fridge. The mother is a single mother who works long hours as an OB doctor. The daughter, Claire, is fifteen and a normal teenager. The two rarely see each other and resort to leaving short notes to communicate. The notes range from shopping lists and reminders to heartfelt communication that cannot be spoken aloud. Their relationship undergoes a drastic change when Claire's mother finds a lump in her breast and both women have to grow up much quicker than they would like.

I really liked this super-quick read. Sure it's predictable and yes, the characters probably should do more communicating face-to-face. But there are always things that are easier to write rather than say in person and Kuipers nails that with this novel. Good commentary on our fast-paced society and realizing what actually matters.
