The Alienist by Caleb Carr
5.0

Read this because of the TNT show, and I think it's fair to say I probably would have given it 4 stars if I hadn't watched the show first. Comparing it to the show, both are great and have small things that the other does better, but I think even if you've never seen the show, this is a genuinely intriguing book for those interested in historical novels with real (Teddy Roosevelt, J P Morgan) and fictional characters, those who like a mix of literary and investigative writing, and anyone interested in the beginning of either forensic science or psychology. Anyone who enjoys the characters from the show or who likes an array of memorable characters such as an eleven year old nicotine addicted street rat attempting to go straight (but not really) who at one point wields a wooden plank with hammered in nails against a room of dangerous prostitutes and their pimps.

Every part of this story, despite being 500 dense pages, was immersive, and I left rather satisfied and even more excited to start the next book. I'm pumped for more rich history, subtle but impactful characterizations, and thrilling mystery. This is definitely something I'll find myself revisiting in the future.
