Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

5.0

This book reminds us that we cannot separate humankind from the vast history of the universe and our shared origin with everything. This connection creates a sense of responsibility and empathy towards each other, something that can even extend to alien life like Rocky. While Project Hail Mary is about space exploration (on the surface, at least), it also presents an opportunity to reflect inwardly on what it means to be part of the universe and what it means to be a friend. I came out of this with a rejuvenated love of science and a reminder to meet everyone with compassion.

I also think Project Hail Mary is a great example of effective science communication. While it is fiction, Weir’s novel reflects a lot of sound scientific concepts and presents them in understandable ways. Weir’s previous novel, The Martian sparked my interest in space science many years ago, and I have no doubt Project Hail Mary will do the same for others. A must-read, for sure!
