Ninefox Gambit
by Yoon Ha Lee
4.5 Stars
I don't even begin to know what to say about this book. I spent so long feeling so lost only to be blown away by the last 20% of the novel. It would be impossible to summarize without major spoilers. This is a world in which Yoon Ha Lee just cold-drops you, for a total immersion experience and, by the time you get your bearings just a bit, Lee yanks the rug out from you with respect to a character you thought you were getting to know but really didn't know much at all. Sure there were little breadcrumbs leading you in the direction of "what the hell happened to and with him?" But I was still caught totally off guard and that's a rare thing for me in this genre. Masterfully crafted plot, well written. I look forward to the second in the Machineries of Empire series. Let's hope there is no calendrical rot between now and next week.
